GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

April 20, 2016

The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in Room 219, Wimberly Bldg., at 1:30 p.m. 

Dr. William Harn, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided.  Dr. Jimmy Moss, Dr. Xianchang Li for Dr. Xuejun Fan, and Dr. Maurice (Nick) Rissman attended.  Also present was Carmen Breaux, Coordinator of Graduate Studies and Dr. Tony Martin.

MINUTES:

Minutes of the March 23, 2016 (#423) meeting were reviewed by the Graduate Council.  Dr. Moss motioned to approve the document, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

NEW BUSINESS: 

College of Business

A memo was submitted to the Graduate Council for ERP Certificate updates.  The College of Business is adding an additional course, MISY 5390 (Current Topics in MIS) along with four other choices for the student select.  The student will only need four out of the five course choices for the certificate.  The Graduate Council reviewed the information and required more clarification.  Dr. Moss motioned to approve with clarification of courses in the ERP Certificate program, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

            Clarification Statement: One additional course was added to ERP Certificate in addition to the four previously offered in the degree plan.  Only four courses or 12 hours are needed for the certification.

Course Additions/ College of Arts and Sciences

A memo was submitted to the Graduate Council from the department of Political Science for the Master of Public Administration program to include a thesis option.   The Graduate Council reviewed the degree plan. Course additions POLS 5390 and POLS 5391 were submitted by the department of Political Science to the Graduate Council.  Dr. Moss motioned to approve the additions with changes to the maximum repeat hours on POLS 5390 to zero and POLS 5391 to 9 repeat hours, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

Course addition BIO 5411 (Biomedical Technology and Application) was submitted to the Graduate Council by Biology Department. The Graduate Council reviewed the documentation and Dr. Moss motioned to approve based on clarification of information in the syllabus pertaining to labs and assignments, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved with condition.

            Clarification Statement: The revised syllabus was submitted by the department with corrections to the wording pertaining to the labs and assignments.

Course Additions/College of Engineering

Course addition ELEN5312 (Power Electronics), was submitted by the department of Electrical Engineering to the Graduate Council.  The Graduate Council reviewed the documentation and Dr. Moss motioned to approve based on clarification of the grading scale, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

            Clarification Statement: The revised syllabus was submitted by the department with corrections to the grading scale.

Course additions ENGR 5331 (Engineering Communication & Ethics), ENGR 5332 (Statistical Principles in Engineering), ENGR 5333 (Mathematical Principles in Engineering) were submitted by the College of Engineering to the Graduate Council.  The Graduate Council reviewed the documentation and Dr. Moss motioned to approve based on clarification of the grading scale, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

            Clarification Statement: The revised syllabus was submitted by the department with corrections to the grading scale.

Course Deletions/College of Education and Human Development

Course deletions SPED 5334 (Tests, Measurement, and Evaluation), SPED5361 (Survey of Exceptional Learners), SPED 5362 (Psychoeducational Evaluation of Exceptional Children), SPED 5363 (Practicum in Psychoeducational Procedures), SPED 5364 (Behavior Modification and Contingency Management), SPED 5365 (Instructional Processes for Exceptional Learners), SPED 5366 (Modification of Curriculum and Instruction), SPED 5388 (Reading and Language Arts for Exceptional Learners), were submitted by the department of Counseling and Special Populations to the Graduate Council.  The Graduate Council reviewed the documentation and Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

 

Conclusion: The next meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wimberly Bldg., Room 219.
